Title: "Is This Real and My War: Blackwork Sampler ft. G. Sage and R. Pettibon"
Medium: hand embroidered black silk and linen threads on white linen fabric and hand dyed pillowcase
Dimensions: 18" x 18"
Date: 2013
About the hand embroidery: The dimension of only the embroidered white cloth is 12" x 12". The embroidery technique is called Blackwork. It is entirely hand embroidered. The threads I used are mostly linen or silk, in a variety of thicknesses.
(L) Wipers "Is This Real?" (1980); (R) Black Flag "My War" (1984)
The imagery is a combination of the album art from the Wipers' "Is this Real?" and Black Flag's "My War". The purpose of this embroidery was to serve as a sampler of my skill and the imagery is a tribute to Greg Sage (of the Wipers) and Raymond Pettibon (The artist responsible for the cover of "My War"). The alphabetical arrangement of the type is a reference to embroidery samplers and is my attempt to obfuscate the words so a viewer does not "read" the piece.
